Curry Ambassadors Call for Greater Gender Diversity in UK Curry Industry – To Break Barriers, Enrich Culture and Ease Staff Shortages

The Curry Ambassadors, appointed by CURRY CNCT, are today launching a nationwide call to action, urging more women to pursue careers across the UK curry sector, and calling on the industry to remove barriers, foster inclusive workplaces, and welcome the vital contribution women bring to culture, innovation and workforce stability.

The UK’s curry industry, a cornerstone of British culinary heritage and hospitality — currently faces widespread staff shortages, with roles ranging from kitchen and front-of-house positions to management, culinary leadership and business ownership remaining chronically underfilled. At the same time, women remain significantly underrepresented at all levels, particularly in senior culinary and operational roles. The Curry Ambassadors believe addressing both challenges together offers a transformative opportunity for the whole sector.

Breaking Down Barriers And Building a Stronger Industry

For too long, outdated perceptions, traditional workplace structures, and cultural expectations have created unnecessary barriers that prevent many women from joining, staying, and advancing within the curry industry. Today’s statement calls on restaurant owners, trade bodies, training providers and industry leaders to:

  • Create flexible, supportive working environments that enable women of all backgrounds to thrive, including fair rostering, safe working conditions and equal progression opportunities
  • Challenge stereotypes and recognise that culinary skill, leadership and business talent know no gender
  • Open up clear pathways for training, mentorship and career advancement, so women can move from entry-level roles to head chefs, managers and business owners
  • Celebrate and elevate the voices, creativity and leadership of the women already working in the sector, as visible role models for the next generation

Cultural Values – The Heartbeat of Our Heritage

“Curry is more than food – it is culture, family, tradition and community,” said a spokesperson for the Curry Ambassadors. “Across every curry-producing nation, women have long been the custodians of recipes, the keepers of culinary heritage, and the heart of the home kitchen. Yet in the professional industry, their talent and expertise have too often been overlooked or sidelined.

Bringing more women into the professional curry sector does far more than fill vacancies. It enriches our cuisine, preserves and evolves authentic cultural knowledge, brings fresh perspectives to menus and service, and ensures the industry truly reflects the diverse communities that both make and love curry in the UK. When we welcome women fully into our industry, we honour its roots – and we make its future stronger, richer and more inclusive.”

Solving the Skills and Staff Shortage Crisis

The UK hospitality and curry sectors continue to face severe recruitment and retention challenges, with labour shortages affecting everything from daily service to business expansion. The Curry Ambassadors emphasise that unlocking the talent of women across the country is one of the most powerful, immediate ways to address this gap — bringing new skills, dedication, creativity and experience into the workforce.

“By removing barriers and becoming truly welcoming and inclusive, the curry industry opens its doors to a vast pool of talented, capable people who have long been denied equal opportunity to contribute,” the Ambassadors stated. “This is not just about fairness – it is about survival, growth and excellence. Greater diversity will ease staffing pressures, raise standards, drive innovation, and secure the curry industry’s place at the heart of British life for generations to come.”

A Call to Action

CURRY CNCT and its Ambassadors are urging:

  • Women across the UK, of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience — to consider the curry industry as a rewarding, viable and welcoming career path, from cooking and hospitality to management and enterprise
  • Restaurant and business owners,  to review workplace practices, ensure equal opportunities, create supportive environments, and actively recruit and promote women at all levels
  • Training and education providers, to deliver accessible, inclusive training and apprenticeships, and encourage women to take up culinary and hospitality roles
  • Industry leaders and policymakers,  to champion gender diversity, highlight role models, and drive lasting change across the sector

“Our industry is stronger when it includes everyone,” said the Ambassadors. “Let us work together to build a curry sector that welcomes, values and empowers women, one that breaks down barriers, celebrates cultural heritage, secures our workforce, and serves the very best of British curry for all.”
